Ground Your Beds for Better Sleep: Earthing Reduces Stress and Inflammation

Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the effects of grounding on sleep and stress.

Context: Grounding has been found to reduce inflammation and cortisol levels. This suggests it may improve sleep quality and duration in people with high stress. However, direct evidence is lacking.

Methods Used: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with adults reporting sleep disruption and stress. The intervention group grounded their beds with conductive sheets for 6 weeks. Sleep quality, stress, and inflammatory markers were measured.

Researchers' Summary of Findings: Grounding significantly increased sleep time, sleep efficiency, and self-reported sleep quality. It also reduced cortisol levels and inflammatory cytokines. These effects were more pronounced in participants with higher baseline stress.

Health Implications: Simple grounding techniques may improve sleep by lowering stress and inflammation. Connecting electrically with the earth during sleep could be an easy, low-cost public health strategy to improve sleep.
