Supporting Cardiovascular Wellness: How Vitamin C Impacts Heart Health
Abstract Objective: To evaluate the impact of Vitamin C supplementation on cardiovascular health, focusing on blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Context: Vitamin C is suggested to have cardiovascular benefits due to its antioxidant properties and role in nitric oxide production, which may help regulate blood pressure and improve cholesterol profiles.
Methods Used: In this study, 200 adults with mild hypertension and elevated cholesterol were randomly divided into two groups. One group received a daily Vitamin C supplement, while the other received a placebo for 8 weeks. Blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and markers of inflammation were measured at the start and end of the study.
Researchers' Summary of Findings: The Vitamin C group experienced a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to the placebo group. Additionally, there was an improvement in cholesterol profiles, with a reduction in LDL cholesterol and an increase in HDL cholesterol. Inflammatory markers were also lower in the Vitamin C group.
