Effects of Fish Oil Supplementation on Cognitive Function in Older Age
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of fish oil supplementation on cognitive function in older adults.
Context: Omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent cognitive decline, but randomized trial evidence is limited.
Methods Used: A double-blind placebo-controlled trial of fish oil capsules (1.8 g DHA/EPA daily) versus corn oil placebo in 400 adults aged 65-85 years over 18 months.
Data Collection: Cognitive assessments were conducted at baseline, 6 months, 12 months, and 18 months.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: Fish oil supplementation slowed the rate of cognitive decline compared to placebo, particularly on tests of reasoning and visual learning.
Health Implications: Fish oil shows promise for preserving cognitive health into older age. Larger, longer trials should further evaluate efficacy.
